Judaism – The Home

It might seem odd to have a section on the home as a Place of Worship on a website like this. However, this just shows how the borders between different aspects of religion can be blurred. In most, if not all religions, the home is an extremely important place for the traditions and beliefs of the religion to be learnt and carried on from generation to generation. The home is more than just a place for eating and sleeping and watching the television. It is a place where learning about religion happens and if this means that if artefacts are used it becomes a place also a place of worship.

The home, and the importance of parents and mother’s place in it, are central to understanding the strong family links in Judaism. On Sabbath eve it is mother who prepares the Shabbat meal and setting of the table. It is mother who lights the two candles to welcome Shabbat and it is mother who says the blessing. Mother ensures kosher regulations are observed correctly. In more senses than one, the home is a place of worship in Judaism.
