The Anglican Church

This film follows Fr Harry Pugh and the congregation of St Bartholomew's Church on a tour of a Church of England church and the worship to be found there. Worship at St Bartholomew's Church illustrates the Anglo-Catholic tradition and so the use of various artefacts and the symbolism attached to them is very important to the congregation.

The church itself has a traditional ground plan with a nave, chancel and sanctuary. Although there are no pews in the nave, the chairs all face towards the altar where the worship is led. The central act of worship performed here is the Eucharist, Holy Communion, or the Lord's Supper.

In this film, Fr Harry outlines the important features of the church and introduces certain core beliefs of Christianity. Fr Harry explains the place of various artefacts used in worship and explains the symbolism associated with them. Fr Harry, and his fellow priest, the Reverend Judy, conduct the service with the help of the congregation.

2. Churches are sacred spaces where believers think they come closer to God. In what ways does the architecture and layout of a church help this to happen? Does worship have to be like the way you saw here? If you had the chance to make changes, what would you do?

3. Christian worship is congregational. What does this mean? In what ways does the church bring people together? How could it do more?
